The five things behind your number

Listed from the one that counts most to the one that counts least.

01How many zones

Nothing moves the price more. Each zone means one more valve, one more wire and one more group of heads. A yard that only needs the front done stays low in the range. A whole lot, front and back, ends up near the top.

02Lawn size and layout

More square feet means more heads. Layout matters even more. Flower beds, trees, odd angles and skinny side yards all take extra heads, or they end up with brown strips.

03Your water supply

Pressure sets how many heads one zone can run. Weak pressure splits the yard into more zones, and every added zone adds a valve and adds cost.

04Hard surfaces in the way

Open grass trenches quickly. A driveway, patio or walk has to be bored under, and that work gets its own line on your estimate.

05The controller

Every system gets a Hunter Hydrawise Wi-Fi timer that you run from your phone. More zones call for a bigger controller, so a large yard costs a bit more here too.

What your price covers

The whole system at one price. No add-on list waiting at the end.

Heads laid out on site — set by our crew in your yard so every corner gets water
Toro valves and wire, Hunter timer — put in, set up, and walked through with you
Trenches and bores — including under walks and drives when the line has to cross
Backflow device — put in to meet code
A full test run — each zone run, each head aimed before the crew leaves
A schedule that fits — timed for sandy ground and new grass, not left on the factory setting

Why island sand makes sprinklers a must

In Avalon, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City and the Wildwoods, the ground is mostly sand. It digs easily, but it lets water run straight through, past the short roots of new grass. Add summer sun, salt air and steady wind, and a lawn dries out fast. That is why we work composted topsoil into the ground on every job. It is also why any lawn bigger than about 1,500 square feet gets sprinklers built into the plan from the start.

Doing sod and sprinklers in one job also costs less. The soil is open, the crew is there once, and the grass gets the right amount of water from its first day. Planning both? Check what sod installation costs next. If a patio or walkway is on your list too, our sister company Ocean County Hardscapes handles that work. Laying the pipe before the pavers go in means nobody has to bore under them later.

Common sprinkler questions

What will a new sprinkler system cost me in Cape May County?
Most new home systems we put in land between $2,850 and $3,950, fully installed. Where you fall depends on how many zones the yard needs and how big it is. A system for just the front lawn falls at the low end. A full front and back yard, with more heads and a bigger controller, falls at the high end. We price each system after we see the yard, and the figure on your written estimate is the figure you pay.
Why does one system cost more than another?
The number of zones matters most, since every zone gets its own valve, its own wire and its own set of heads. Next comes the size and shape of the lawn. Planting beds, trees and tight corners call for extra heads so nothing goes dry. After that we look at your water source and pressure, the controller size, and whether pipe has to pass under a driveway, patio or walk. Passing under hard surfaces means boring, which costs more than an open trench.
Is a sprinkler system required with new sod?
For lawns larger than about 1,500 square feet, it is. We are not padding the bill. A hose cannot keep that much new sod alive through a summer down here, where the sandy ground lets water drain away fast. If the sod dries out in the three weeks it needs to root, it will not bounce back. So on bigger jobs we lay sod only when irrigation is already working and checked, or when we put a system in as part of the job.
I already have a lawn. Can you still put sprinklers in?
Yes, we do it all the time. We bore under walks and driveways where needed, and we keep the trenches narrow so the grass heals fast. If you are also getting new sod, doing both at once costs less than two separate jobs, because the ground is already torn up.
Do you open up and check existing systems?
Yes. A sprinkler turn-on with a full check of the system costs $150. It comes free with an estimate under our Lawn Rescue offer. If we find something to repair, we price it on its own and wait for your OK before we touch it.
How many days does the install take?
Most home systems take one or two days. When sod is part of the same job, the sprinklers go in first, so the new grass gets water the same day it is laid.
What warranty comes with a new system?
Every new system carries a two year warranty on parts and labor. That covers the heads, valves, controller, pipe and fittings. If a part fails or our work is the cause, we repair it at no cost and with no service call charge. The makers of the heads and timer add their own warranties on top of ours.
